We’re stoked to officially welcome Michael Whitmee as our newest Senior Coach at Skillset Basketball! Michael has been an integral part of our coaching team, and it’s awesome to see him take this next step in his leadership journey.
Recently, we caught up with Michael to chat about his experience so far, how coaching has shaped him beyond the court, and why fresh energy keeps our basketball community thriving.
Michael's Basketball Coaching Journey with Skillset

How have you found coaching with us so far?
Michael: “It’s been great. I’ve really enjoyed it, actually. It’s been a good experience to give back, and it fits really well with Uni life.”
What have been the highlights?
Michael: “Coaching with Brett and getting coached myself has been really valuable. Watching these kids grow and become more confident in what they’re doing has been a highlight for sure.”
How has working with Brett helped your growth?
Michael: “As a basketball player, coaching has helped me improve so much. Being coached before and after sessions, and then being able to teach what I’ve learned to others, has helped me not just as a coach but also as a player myself.”
Can you share a memorable coaching moment?
Michael: “One moment that really stands out was when I was playing U17 reps. Before our first game, our coach told us, ‘I know we’re going to win—we’ve got me.’ That was the first time I really saw how much impact a coach can have on their players and their mindset during a game.”
What would you say to someone thinking about becoming a Junior Coach?
Michael: “Do it. It’s rewarding. It’s great to give back, to share what I know, and to see players develop—not just in their skills, but in their love of the game.”
Michael’s journey is exactly why we’re so passionate about developing our coaching crew. If you’re keen to grow your leadership skills, give back to the basketball community, and develop as both a coach and player, we’ve got spaces for our mentoring program available in Wellington and Auckland.
