Trying something new can feel like a big step, especially when you are signing your child up for a new activity and are not quite sure what the first session will actually be like.
At Skillset, we want a free trial to feel simple, welcoming, and easy to step into. No surprises. No pressure. Just a chance for your child and your whānau to get a feel for the environment and see whether it is the right fit.

When you arrive
When you arrive at a Skillset session, one of the first things that should happen is a check-in with the Head Coach.
This gives your family a chance to put a face to the programme straight away, ask any quick questions, and help your child feel a little more settled before the session begins.
From there, your child is welcomed to join in, but never pressured to.
Some children jump straight onto the court. Some like to stand close to mum or dad for a little while first. Some want to watch before they join. All of that is okay.
Your child does not need to be confident right away
One of the biggest worries parents have is whether their child will be too shy or whether they need prior basketball experience.
That is exactly why free trials exist.
Your child does not need experience to come along, and they definitely do not need to arrive looking like they already know what they are doing. Skillset sessions are designed to support a wide range of ages, stages, and confidence levels.
If a child is feeling unsure, our coaches will continue checking in throughout the session. They will adjust drills where needed, offer encouragement, and give extra support when it helps.
That extra care matters to us. It is also why we have three coaches on the floor, so there is enough support for the group while still being able to notice the kids who might need a little more time or attention.
What parents can expect in each programme
Free trials are full sessions, so your child gets a real feel for the class rather than a watered-down version.
What your role looks like depends a little on the programme.
Hoop Club
In Hoop Club, parent involvement is part of the experience. Parents are expected to stay, watch, and join in. This helps younger children feel safe, supported, and ready to have fun.
BASE Mini
In BASE Mini, parents are very welcome to stay and watch. Many do, especially if their child is trying it for the first time.
BASE
In BASE, the sessions are longer and the players are generally older, so parents are welcome to stay, come in for the start and finish, or step away and return. Most of the children in this group are old enough to tell their parents afterwards how they felt about the session.
No matter the programme, our coaches should check in with families and connect after the session.
What if my child mostly watches from the sideline?
That can still be a successful free trial.
Not every child is ready to jump in fully on day one. Sometimes the biggest win is simply walking into a new space, watching what happens, and beginning to feel safe there.
Because of that, our coaches can use their discretion to extend a free trial to another session where needed. For example, if a family wants to try a different age group, or if a child spent most of the first session on the sideline and just needs a bit more time to warm up to the environment, we can often allow a second try.
We want the trial to be useful, not rushed.
What should you bring?
Keep it simple:
a drink bottle
sneakers
comfortable clothes
And yes, princess dresses are allowed. Batman outfits too.
We care a lot more about a child feeling comfortable and happy enough to join in than we do about them arriving in perfect sports gear.
Will my child be behind if it is their first session?
Usually, no.
In most sessions, trial players simply join in with the rest of the group.
In Hoop Club, we work on the same three core skill areas each session: dribbling, passing, and shooting. That repetition is intentional. It helps younger children build familiarity, confidence, and a sense of success over time. Even if it is their first session, they can still join in at their own level and be supported through the activities.
In BASE Mini and BASE, the topic changes each session, which helps create a more even playing field for new and returning players alike. Everyone is often stepping into a slightly different focus each week, so trial players are not walking into a group where everybody else is miles ahead on that day’s theme.
The only week that looks a little different across all programmes is the last week of term, where we run Parents vs Kids.
The goal is not to make new children feel like they are catching up to everyone else. The goal is to help them step in and experience the session in a way that feels manageable, positive, and fun.
What makes a Skillset free trial different?
For us, a free trial is not just about seeing whether a child can do the drills.
It is also about whether the environment feels right.
We want families to experience:
a welcoming and encouraging coaching team
a playful, supportive atmosphere
an environment where beginners are genuinely welcome
a programme that includes whānau, not just players
a space where children can build confidence at their own pace
For many families, that matters just as much as the basketball itself.
What happens after the trial?
After the session, coaches should check in with you and see how things felt.
Then, the following week, families receive a follow-up email with a discount code they can use toward the remaining sessions if they decide to join.
That way, the next step feels clear and easy.
Still not sure?
That is okay too.
A lot of families have questions before their first session, especially around experience level, timing, cost, or whether their child will feel comfortable. That is completely normal.
If you are still figuring out which programme is the right fit, you can also read our guide on choosing the right basketball programme for your child.
But if you are ready to take the first step, our free trial is designed to make that step feel lighter.
Come give it a go
A free trial should not feel intimidating. It should feel like a warm welcome.
If you would like to see whether Skillset is the right fit for your child, book a free trial and come meet the team.
And if you still have questions first, send us a message. We are always happy to help.
