Basketball Coaching Opportunities with Skillset: More Than a Casual Coaching Job

Check out our current roles

If you are looking for a basketball coaching opportunity, chances are you already care about the game or the people

You might be a player who wants to start coaching.

You might be a young person looking for your first coaching role.

You might be a parent or community member who wants to help young players grow.

You might already be coaching a clearer pathway to go into sports full-time.

Skillset Basketball's kaupapa aims to make coaching more supported, with clearer pathways and opportunities in the long run.

We are building a coaching environment where you can learn, be mentored, develop confidence, and grow into a stronger coach over time.

Our goal is simple: Resilient Kids. Strong Families. Well-Equipped Leaders.

That includes the children in our programmes, but it also includes the coaches who lead them.

Coach with Skillset Basketball

Skillset Basketball offers coaching opportunities across our current locations in West Auckland, North Shore, and Wellington.

Our programmes are grassroots and beginner-focused, which means our coaches play an important role in helping children build confidence, coordination, skills, and a positive connection with basketball.

This is not only about teaching kids how to dribble, pass, shoot, or play defence.

It is about learning how to coach properly.

How to manage a group.

How to explain a skill clearly.

How to support beginners.

How to adjust when something is not working.

How to keep a session moving without losing the fun of the game.

We bring experienced coaching knowledge into beginner and grassroots spaces because we believe young players deserve good coaching from the very start.

More than a casual coaching job

One of the hardest parts of coaching is that it can become a silo.

You might be the only person at training.

The only person organising the game..

The only person parents ask questions and flinging complaints at

The only person looking up 12 different drills on youtube.

The only person holding the whole thing together.

And when everything depends on one person, even a good programme can become hard to sustain.

Skillset is built differently.

We aim to have a team of coaches at each venue every week, so the full weight of the session does not sit on one person.

That team approach gives you people to learn from, bounce ideas off, and grow alongside. It also means you are part of something bigger than one session, one team, or one location.

Our coaching pathways

Our Coaching Opportunities page outlines three main coaching roles at Skillset: Junior Coach, Senior Coach, and Head Coach.

Each role has a different level of responsibility, but the pathway is designed to help coaches grow over time.

Junior Coach

  • Junior Coach is our entry point for people who are new to coaching.

  • This role is suited to teenagers, young adults, parents, players, or community members who want to learn how to coach in a supported environment.

  • No coaching experience is needed for Junior Coach roles.

  • The focus is on learning, helping, observing, building confidence, and becoming part of the coaching team.

Senior Coach

  • Senior Coach is a paid coaching role for people with strong basketball knowledge and the ability to lead.

  • Senior Coaches need to be able to take a full session across our programme levels if needed. They support the delivery of sessions, help guide Junior Coaches, and play an important role in keeping the programme consistent each week.

  • This role is for coaches who are ready for more responsibility and can confidently support children through structured basketball learning.

Head Coach

  • Head Coach is a leadership role within Skillset.

  • Head Coaches lead programmes, support coaching teams, help maintain quality, and bring the Skillset kaupapa to life in their location.

  • A Head Coach must have been a Senior Coach first, because we want our leaders to understand the programme, the expectations, the coaching environment, and the way Skillset operates before stepping into that level of responsibility.

  • For the right person, Skillset is also open to supporting future locations where a Head Coach is ready to lead locally with the right support behind them.

Coach development is part of the programme

At Skillset, coach development is not an extra. It is part of how we operate.

Our coaches are supported through:

  • session guidance

  • weekly themes

  • mentoring

  • group chat support

  • termly wānanga during the school holidays

  • one national wānanga each year

  • technical and soft-skill development

  • opportunities to learn from other coaches

You are not expected to figure everything out from scratch or fall into an endless pit of YouTube videos trying to build sessions alone.

We have programme structure, coaching themes, shared learning, and people with years of experience at regional, national and international year in our team you to help.

That matters whether you are coaching for the first time or stepping into a more experienced leadership role.

Grassroots coaching with real support behind it

A lot of people want to be part of sport.

Not everyone wants to manage registrations, marketing, parent communication, payments, admin systems, programme planning, and everything else that sits behind a sports programme.

That is where Skillset offers a different pathway.

For the right coaches, especially those growing into leadership, Skillset can support the wider structure around coaching, including:

  • admin systems

  • registrations

  • marketing

  • parent communication

  • programme structure

  • coach training

  • brand support

  • website support

  • payment systems

  • ongoing development

This allows coaches to focus more on coaching while still being part of a wider organisation with systems, support, and a clear kaupapa behind it.

For some coaches, this may become a pathway toward helping lead or grow a Skillset location in the future.

Is coaching with Skillset right for you?

Skillset coaching opportunities may suit you if you:

  • want to grow from volunteer coaching into paid coaching roles

  • want mentoring, training, and a team around you

  • are interested in future leadership opportunities

What matters is that you care about coaching well, show up reliably, and want to keep improving.
