Kids Basketball in Lower Hutt & Wellington: Finding the Right Fit for Your Child

Finding kids basketball in Wellington is not always about whether basketball exists.
It does.
The harder part is finding the right kind of basketball for your child’s age, stage, confidence, and location.
Across Wellington and the Hutt Valley, families can find school competitions, after-school games, girls’ programmes, holiday camps, and skill development sessions. Wellington Basketball offers Year 0–4 after-school training and Year 3–8 after-school games, while Basketball Hutt Valley supports school competitions at Walter Nash Stadium in Taita.
There are also more targeted options. Girls Got Game offers Lower Hutt sessions for girls wanting to try basketball in a fun and safe environment, and MOVE Basketball offers training for ages 7–18 across different development stages.
So the issue is not that there are no basketball options.
It is that once parents start filtering for something regular, beginner-friendly, suitable for younger children, open to whānau involvement, and not competition-first, the options can become more limited.
Where Skillset sits in the Wellington basketball scene

Our Lower Hutt programme is a regular basketball training programme based at Taita College. It is designed for children aged 4–14 who are either starting basketball, building confidence, or wanting extra development alongside the basketball they already play.
For some players, Skillset is their first doorway into the sport.
For others, it is the extra layer that helps them grow while they are already playing for a school team, club, or local league.
That is especially important in Wellington. Of our three Skillset locations, Wellington has one of our strongest coaching knowledge bases, with coaches who bring high-level playing, coaching, and pathway experience into a grassroots setting.
Our Lower Hutt age groups
Our Lower Hutt programme has two main groups.
BASE “Mini” | Ages 4–8
For younger players building movement, listening, teamwork, confidence, and early basketball basics.
BASE | Ages 8–14
For older players ready for more structure, stronger skill development, game understanding, and challenge.
This makes Skillset useful for two types of families.
The first is the family looking for a soft, supportive introduction to basketball.
The second is the family whose child already plays, but wants extra coaching in a lower-pressure space.
Our belief quality coaching should not only be available once a child is already “good enough.”
What makes Skillset different?
Skillset is built around the child and the whānau around them.
For younger players, parent involvement can help children feel more settled and confident. Across our sessions, parents are welcome to watch, ask questions, learn from drills, and understand how to support their child outside of training.

That is useful for parents who coach school teams, practise with their child at home, or are still learning basketball themselves.
We also know Wellington and the Hutt Valley are multicultural communities. Where possible, Skillset supports multilingual families and creates a space where parents feel comfortable asking questions and understanding what their child is learning.
The goal is not just to teach basketball.
It is to make basketball easier for families to enter, understand, and enjoy together.
When Skillset might be the right fit
Skillset may suit your child if they:
are between 4 and 14 years old
are new to basketball or still building confidence
already play in a team and want extra development
need clear, patient coaching
want access to experienced coaches in a lower-pressure setting
enjoy sport but need help strengthening the basics
would benefit from a regular weekly programme
have parents who want to better understand how to support their development
Some children use Skillset as their first step into basketball.
Others use it as a bridge into school teams, club basketball, local leagues, or more advanced training later on.
